*Chapter 2: The Shadow in the Trees*
As they ventured back into the darkness, the group's flashlights cast eerie shadows on the trees. The whispering seemed to have stopped, replaced by an unsettling silence.
"Matt!" Alex called out, his voice echoing through the forest.
No response.
They moved cautiously, scanning their surroundings for any sign of Matt or the gaunt figure.
"Guys, look," Ben whispered, pointing to a faint trail of footprints in the dirt.
The prints seemed to lead deeper into the woods. The group followed, their hearts pounding.
Suddenly, Emily gasped.
"What?" Jake asked, his eyes scanning the surroundings.
"That tree," Emily whispered, pointing to a twisted, ancient tree looming before them.
Carved into its trunk was a symbol – identical to the runes they'd seen in the cabin.
"This is getting weirder by the minute," Sarah muttered.
As they approached the tree, the air grew colder. The symbol began to glow with an otherworldly light.
"Matt's here," Alex said, his voice firm.
A figure emerged from behind the tree – Matt, his eyes vacant, his skin pale.
"Matt!" Alex exclaimed, rushing toward his friend.
But Matt didn't respond. He walked slowly, mechanically, toward the symbol.
"Matt, snap out of it!" Jake shouted.
Matt's eyes locked onto the symbol, and he raised his hand, touching the glowing rune.
The forest erupted into chaos – whispers, screams, and snapping branches.
"What's happening?" Sarah cried.
The group watched in horror as Matt's body began to twist and contort, his limbs elongating like a puppet on strings.
"Run!" Alex yelled.
But it was too late. Matt's transformation was complete. He stood before them, a dark, twisted version of himself.
"Welcome to the Whispering Woods," Matt's voice growled, no longer human.
The group froze, paralyzed by fear.
And then, everything went black.
